Peridot Information Peridot is the traditional birthstone for the month of August. Along with many other gemstones, peridot traces its origins back to ancient Egypt where it was believe to aid friendship and free the mind of envious thoughts. Hawaiians have always viewed peridot of the Goddess Pele's tears as peridot has been found in Hawaiian volcanoes. Peridot occurs only in green due to the presence of iron and is supplied by New Mexico and Arizona in the United States, Burma, Russia, Pakistan, Egypt and Norway.
