Amethyst is the traditional birthstone for the month of February and is widely considered the most popular purple gemstone. The love of amethyst dates back to the ancient Greeks who believed it would prevent them from drunkenness. It has also been known to bring peace of mind to the wearer and when engraved with the sun or moon it is believed to prevent death by poison. Even the great Leonardo Da Vinci believed that amethyst would ward off his evil thoughts and raise his intelligence. Amethyst is found in all ranges of purple and when intensely colored may show intense red flashes. The finest amethysts come from Bolivia, Brazil and Russia with major sources in Australia, Canada, Germany, Madagascar, Namibia, Sri Lanka, Uruguay, Mexico, Zambia and the United States.
